Web Design Phuket: Buyer's Guide to Picking an Agency (2026)
Phuket has 200+ web design agencies — from freelancers charging in the thousands of baht to international shops charging in the millions. The question hotel, restaurant, and tour owners ask us most often: “How do I know which ones are real?”
This article walks through the framework we use when helping clients pick (including the times we choose not to take the work and recommend a different agency).
7 Red Flags Bad Phuket Agencies Show
1. “Phuket website, 5,000 THB, done”
That’s a ThemeForest template, downloaded with the logo swapped. No performance, no SEO foundation, and it breaks within 12 months when a plugin updates.
2. No tech stack named
A good agency tells you whether they’ll use WordPress, Astro, Next.js, Webflow — and explains why. A quote with no stack named = template.
3. No discovery phase
Good projects start with 1-2 hours of conversation about business model, customers, and workflow before a quote. A quote within 24 hours with no call = a packaged offering.
4. Portfolio is mockup images, not live URLs
Ask for live URLs of their 3 most recent projects. If they only show screenshots or Behance/Dribbble = they didn’t build it themselves.
5. No mention of mobile performance
70%+ of Phuket hotel traffic is mobile. If the agency doesn’t talk about Mobile PageSpeed = they don’t understand the market.
6. “SEO included free” or “SEO setup in the package”
Real SEO needs dedicated effort. “Free SEO” = an auto-tool sending a report with no real impact.
7. No maintenance plan
Websites aren’t “ship and done.” Year 2 onward needs someone on updates, security, and backups. If they don’t mention it = expect to pay extra later.
10 Questions to Ask (Before Signing)
Every question is the kind of thing where: “if a good agency can’t answer it, you already know they’re not the one.”
- What tech stack will you use, and why?
- Show me live URLs of 3 recent projects similar to mine.
- What’s the Mobile PageSpeed score on your most recent project? — Open PageSpeed Insights during the call.
- Is there a discovery phase? How long?
- Where will it be deployed? Who pays for hosting?
- Is the source code mine or yours?
- Will there be documentation and training after handoff?
- Monthly maintenance — how much, and what does it cover?
- If I want to edit content myself, what CMS? How easy?
- How does multi-language work? (Critical for Phuket — TH/EN/CN is the minimum)
Portfolio Review Framework
Check these 5 against the agency’s recent projects:
1. Performance (open PageSpeed Insights live)
- Mobile 90+ = Excellent
- Mobile 70-89 = OK
- Mobile < 70 = Avoid
2. SEO Foundation
- Schema.org JSON-LD? — view-source, search for
application/ld+json. - Sitemap? —
domain.com/sitemap.xml. - hreflang if multi-language? — view-source, search for
hreflang.
3. Mobile UX
- Open on an actual phone — does it feel smooth?
- Are CTA buttons big enough for a thumb tap?
- Are forms easy to fill?
4. Design Quality
- Does it look custom-designed, or templated?
- Is there thought behind the typography?
- Is the photography high quality?
5. Still Live?
- Are projects from 2022-2023 still live?
- If the agency shows projects that are down, they don’t maintain post-launch.
Modern Stack (Astro/Next.js) vs WordPress / Page Builder
| Factor | Astro / Next.js | WordPress / Page Builder |
|---|---|---|
| PageSpeed (Mobile) | 90+ on Day 1 | 50-75 typical |
| SEO Foundation | Built-in (Schema, hreflang) | Plugin install required |
| Security | Static = nothing to hack | Patches needed for every plugin |
| Maintenance | Hosting < 500 THB/month | Plugin updates weekly |
| Edit Content | Git / Headless CMS | Visual editor |
| Build Time | 8-16 weeks | 4-10 weeks |
| Initial Cost | 200,000+ THB | 80,000+ THB |
| 5-year TCO | 30-40% lower | Higher, because maintenance + hosting tier creep |

Phuket Agency Types — Which Suits You
Local Freelance (5,000 – 50,000 THB)
Best for: startup, personal brand, pop-up event site. Not for: businesses with 5M+ THB/year revenue.
Phuket Boutique Agency (80,000 – 300,000 THB)
Best for: SME, mid-tier restaurants, tour operators, 3-4 star hotels. Not for: multi-property hotel chains, international e-commerce.
International / Mid-tier (200,000 – 800,000+ THB)
Best for: 4-5 star hotels, luxury villas, multi-market businesses.
Self-managed (Webflow / Framer Subscription)
Best for: designers who can DIY, pre-launch landing pages. Not for: teams without time to learn the tool.
Where Southern Whale Fits
We’re a Phuket-based Premium Custom Build shop — 150,000 to 800,000 THB for marketing sites, more for web apps. Astro + Next.js is our default.
We’re a good fit for:
- 3-5 star hotels and resorts that need direct booking + multi-language.
- Tour operators that need a booking system.
- E-commerce that needs serious performance.
- B2B / professional services.
We’re not a fit for:
- Budgets under 150,000 THB — others do that better than we can.
- “I want to edit it all in a page builder” — that’s not what we do.
- Under 4-week timelines — our cycle is 8-16 weeks (discovery + design + dev).
